وَتَرَكنا فيها آيَةً لِلَّذينَ يَخافونَ العَذابَ الأَليمَ

We left in it a sign for those who fear the dreadful punishment.

وَفي موسىٰ إِذ أَرسَلناهُ إِلىٰ فِرعَونَ بِسُلطانٍ مُبينٍ

Also, in Moses, We sent him to Pharaoh with apparent authority.

فَتَوَلّىٰ بِرُكنِهِ وَقالَ ساحِرٌ أَو مَجنونٌ

But he turned away with his chiefs and said, “A magician or a madman!”

فَأَخَذناهُ وَجُنودَهُ فَنَبَذناهُم فِي اليَمِّ وَهُوَ مُليمٌ

So, We seized him and his troops, and We threw them into the sea, and he was to blame.

وَفي عادٍ إِذ أَرسَلنا عَلَيهِمُ الرّيحَ العَقيمَ

Also, in Aad, when We sent against them the barren wind.

وَفي ثَمودَ إِذ قيلَ لَهُم تَمَتَّعوا حَتّىٰ حينٍ

And in Thamud, when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while.”

فَعَتَوا عَن أَمرِ رَبِّهِم فَأَخَذَتهُمُ الصّاعِقَةُ وَهُم يَنظُرونَ

They defied their Lord’s command, so the thunderbolt seized them while they looked on.

فَمَا استَطاعوا مِن قِيامٍ وَما كانوا مُنتَصِرينَ

They were unable to rise, nor could they defend themselves.

وَقَومَ نوحٍ مِن قَبلُ ۖ إِنَّهُم كانوا قَومًا فاسِقينَ

And the people of Noah before them. They were a sinful people.

وَالسَّماءَ بَنَيناها بِأَيدٍ وَإِنّا لَموسِعونَ

We built the universe with power, and We are expanding it.
