Surah Al-Fajr - The Dawn

Chapter 89•Meccan•30 verses
الفجر
Verse 1

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ وَالفَجرِ

By the dawn.

Verse 2

وَلَيالٍ عَشرٍ

And ten nights.

Verse 3

وَالشَّفعِ وَالوَترِ

And by the even and the odd.

Verse 4

وَاللَّيلِ إِذا يَسرِ

And the night as it passes.

Verse 5

هَل في ذٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِذي حِجرٍ

Is there in this an oath for a man of sense?

Verse 6

أَلَم تَرَ كَيفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعادٍ

Didn’t you see how your Lord dealt with Aad?

Verse 7

إِرَمَ ذاتِ العِمادِ

Iram of the pillars.

Verse 8

الَّتي لَم يُخلَق مِثلُها فِي البِلادِ

The likes of which had never been created in the lands.

Verse 9

وَثَمودَ الَّذينَ جابُوا الصَّخرَ بِالوادِ

And Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

Verse 10

وَفِرعَونَ ذِي الأَوتادِ

And Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?

Verse 11

الَّذينَ طَغَوا فِي البِلادِ

All of them transgressed within their lands.

Verse 12

فَأَكثَروا فيهَا الفَسادَ

Spreading rampant corruption and chaos.

Verse 13

فَصَبَّ عَلَيهِم رَبُّكَ سَوطَ عَذابٍ

Therefore, your Lord poured upon them a whip of punishment.

Verse 14

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالمِرصادِ

Your Lord lies in ambush.

Verse 15

فَأَمَّا الإِنسانُ إِذا مَا ابتَلاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقولُ رَبّي أَكرَمَنِ

As for man: when his Lord tests him, honors him, and blesses him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”

Verse 16

وَأَمّا إِذا مَا ابتَلاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيهِ رِزقَهُ فَيَقولُ رَبّي أَهانَنِ

Yet, when He tests him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”

Verse 17

كَلّا ۖ بَل لا تُكرِمونَ اليَتيمَ

But no! You don’t honor the orphan.

Verse 18

وَلا تَحاضّونَ عَلىٰ طَعامِ المِسكينِ

And you don’t encourage one another to feed the poor.

Verse 19

وَتَأكُلونَ التُّراثَ أَكلًا لَمًّا

And you devour inheritance with all greed.

Verse 20

وَتُحِبّونَ المالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

And you love wealth with vehement love.

Verse 21

كَلّا إِذا دُكَّتِ الأَرضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

When the earth is leveled, pounded, and pulverized.

Verse 22

وَجاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

And your Lord comes and the angels, rank upon rank.

Verse 23

وَجِيءَ يَومَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَومَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الإِنسانُ وَأَنّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكرىٰ

On that Day, Hell will be presented. On that Day, man will remember, but how will remembrance avail him?

Verse 24

يَقولُ يا لَيتَني قَدَّمتُ لِحَياتي

He will say, “Oh, I wish I had prepared for my life!”

Verse 25

فَيَومَئِذٍ لا يُعَذِّبُ عَذابَهُ أَحَدٌ

On that Day, none will punish as His punishment.

Verse 26

وَلا يوثِقُ وَثاقَهُ أَحَدٌ

And none will shackle as His shackles.

Verse 27

يا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفسُ المُطمَئِنَّةُ

But as for you, O tranquil soul.

Verse 28

ارجِعي إِلىٰ رَبِّكِ راضِيَةً مَرضِيَّةً

Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing.

Verse 29

فَادخُلي في عِبادي

Join My servants!

Verse 30

وَادخُلي جَنَّتي

And enter My Paradise!
